Latest plans for 25-metre 5G mast in Kenilworth refused
Fresh plans to install a 5G mast in Kenilworth have been thrown out by Warwick District Council (WDC).
District planners have refused Cornerstone's application to relocate its existing mast from Kenilworth Wardens sports club to Leamington Road, saying it would "cause unacceptable harm" to the appearance of the local area.
The telecommunications company said the 25-metre high mast could no longer be accommodated at the Glasshouse Lane club, but is needed to maintain the local network.
The application said multiple locations were considered before selecting the verge close to the Thickthorn Roundabout.
Kenilworth Town Council, although not objecting, did raise concerns about how close the mast would be to a new housing estate.
And refusing the scheme, a WDC report said: "Whilst other sites have been discounted the local planning authority considers that insufficient evidence has been provided to demonstrate that alternative suitable sites, which are immediately adjacent to the site by where trees would not need to be removed or impacted, have been sought for the proposed location of the new telecommunication installation.
"The proposal therefore fails to accord with local and national planning guidance on the siting of telecommunication installations."
Some 37 members of the public had objected to the plans.
Previous applications for 5G masts in the town have recently been rejected, with CK Hutchinson Networks refused permission for a mast near Kenilworth Cemetery and another application on St John's Street also thrown out.
Cornerstone said it is "vital that the connectivity provided by the existing site is replaced" to provide "continued reliable mobile digital connectivity to the area".
