Local MP Sir Jeremy Wright says he shares the concerns of many local residents over plans to redevelop Wellesbourne Airfield.

Plans to rebuild the runway and install a new control tower, reception, waiting lounge and hangers have recently been put forward by land promoter Gladman and commercial property developer Stoford.

The two companies have recently held a public consultation on the project, which also includes plans for a new café, industrial units and aircraft parking area.

But before a planning application is submitted to Stratford-upon-Avon District Council, the MP for Kenilworth and Southam has had his say on the scheme.

"Although planning is a matter for local and not national government and MPs do not decide planning applications, I share many of the concerns expressed about the proposed development on the airfield site and I have met representatives from Stratford District Council and Wellesbourne Parish Council to discuss it further," he said in a statement.

"I will do my best to ensure that the interests of those who live next to the airfield and of the wider Wellesbourne community are considered properly."

When the plans were first revealed this summer, Gladman and Stoford said the redevelopment was vital to make sure the airfield has a "long future" and "becomes a contemporary aviation destination".

"The rejuvenated airfield will not only continue to attract 'recreational' flyers but also have a wider appeal to attract flight training, business travel and business tenancies, thereby being attractive for a commercial operator, who can ensure the continued operation of the airfield function into the future," a statement said.
