Kenilworth's MP 'concerned' with delays to town's new swimming pools
Kenilworth's MP has said he is "concerned" about the delays to the town's new swimming pools.
Work on the new Abbey Fields Leisure Centre has been halted for weeks following the discovery of a number of archaeological remains.
Warwick District Council (WDC) last week announced that new designs for the pools had been signed off by Historic England, and must now be submitted for planning approval.
But with councillors also set to have their say on the project, Sir Jeremy Wright has requested an update from WDC.
"I am concerned about the delays in the finalisation of the Abbey Fields Swimming Pool project, though the consequences of the archaeological finds clearly have to be managed sensitively," he said.
"I have been in touch with Warwick District Council and I will be meeting the project managers to discuss progress."
New Designs
WDC said the new designs will raise the level of the new leisure centre so it sits over the historic remains uncovered in the park.
Over the last year the remains of five buildings associated with the abbey have been discovered under the old pools.
Now the revised plans have been approved by Historic England, a section 73 'material amendment to planning permission' will be submitted for consideration by local planners.
Should councillors sign off on the new designs, it is expected that construction work would then be able to resume.
Kenilworth Town Council has repeatedly made calls for more information on the project from its district colleagues.
Meanwhile local campaigners have continued to call on WDC to rethink the project and build an energy-efficient outdoor pool.
