Kenilworth's MP speaks out against Tier Three for constituency

By James Smith 1st Nov 2021

MP for Kenilworth and Southam Jeremy Wright has today spoken out against the constituency being placed in Tier Three of the Government's three-tier system for dealing with Covid-19.

In a statement for the Health Secretary Matt Hancock this morning (November 26) it was announced that Kenilworth and the rest of Warwickshire would be placed in the 'Very High' risk category following the end of the second national lockdown.

Warwickshire, which had been in Tier One at the beginning of November, will now face much harsher restrictions come December 3.

In a statement today Mr Wright has said "The figures for the prevalence of the Covid-19 virus in Kenilworth and Southam do not support the constituency being in Tier Three.

"The reason we will be from next week, is because a decision has been made to group Warwickshire with Coventry and Solihull.

"Hospitality businesses will not be able to open next week not because of the virus rates where they are, but because of rates across a much wider and more diverse geographical area. I do not think that is right and said so in the House of Commons this morning.

"I will now be asking the Secretary of State for an urgent review of Warwickshire's position, in addition to the more general review of how areas have been grouped together I think is also necessary."

Covid-19 figures in Warwickshire for a whole are currently 236/100,000 - the lowest of any of the regions in Tier Three. In Tier Two Chesire has the highest rate at 208/100,000.
