Kenilworth Town Council could be in charge of more services if new 'super council' is approved

By James Smith 22nd Oct 2021

Kenilworth Town Council could take charge over a number of services from Warwick District Council should a new 'super council' be formed for south Warwickshire.

KTC unanimously approved a motion at yesterday's town council meeting to open talks with Warwick and Stratford District Councils about the possibility of taking over services such as green space management should the councils merge.

The town council has also requested that more information be given on promised "tailored services" that will "strengthen the work of parish and town councils".

This is particularly significant given the amount of investment by the town council coming through CIL funding which will need a lot of support for the district council.

The motion, which was unanimously approved by the town council, came in response to a briefing by the chief executive of WDC on the proposed merger.

Councillors were given more information on how the proposed South Warwickshire Council would interact with residents as well as town councils.

Speaking at yesterday's KTC meeting Cllr James Kennedy said: "As a town council we know that we have benefitted a lot from support from the district council, so we need to make sure that we receive at least the same support from the new council if it is approved."

Speaking on possible increased services for KTC Cllr Kennedy added: "For example in Stratford district, apart from in Stratford town, all of the green spaces management are undertaken by those parish and town councils."

Votes on the new South Warwickshire Council will take place at WDC and SDC separately at the beginning of December before any proposals are sent to the Secretary of State for approval.
