Kenilworth planning roundup: thousands of houses, HS2 bridge and energy box
By James Smith 30th May 2026
Here are the biggest local planning stories from the past week.
Gap to Coventry
The gap between Coventry and Kenilworth looks likely to get smaller as the draft of the South Warwickshire Local Plan (SWLP) is revealed.
Warwick and Stratford-on-Avon District Councils have discussed the final public consultation on the major planning document this week.
The plan - which will govern where thousands of houses are built over the next 25 years - currently has land south of Coventry earmarked for just over 4,000 new homes.
In previous documents for the draft SWLP, up to 6,000 houses had been suggested for the area of land.
Green Bridge
Council planners have given the go-ahead for a new 'green' bridge to carry a diverted footpath over the HS2 line.
Works will see a 53.5 metre-long bridge carry footpath W130 over the line near Rugby Road, Cubbington.
While the bridge will be made of precast concrete, it will be landscaped "to preserve nearby ancient woodland while promoting improved ecological connectivity of species across the HS2 line".
Warwick District Council signed off on the plans this month.

Micro Energy
A planning inspector has granted an appeal for a 'micro energy battery box' to be built on a busy road between Kenilworth and Leamington Spa.
Warwick District Council had refused planning permission for the battery box on Kenilworth Road last year saying it was inappropriate in the green belt.
AMP Clean Energy then submitted an appeal to the planning inspectorate, which has now been allowed.
