Kenilworth planning roundup: 180 homes, gigafactory
By James Smith 18th Apr 2026
Here are the biggest local planning stories from the past week.
Housing Scheme
A planning application for 180 new homes in Kenilworth has been submitted to Warwick District Council.
Richborough Estates has applied for permission for the new development off Rouncil Lane.
If approved, the scheme would see a new junction created off the busy road near the former Kenilworth School sixth form site.
Gigafactory Go-Ahead
A mum's fire safety fears over the gigafactory proposed at Coventry Airport were dismissed as Warwick District Council granted the final part of planning permission this week.
Councillors acknowledged the concerns of objectors, which included those of neighbour Terri Wells over the prospect of lithium batteries potentially producing fires that are much harder to fight, but gave the green light without exception.
Outline – in-principle – permission for the giant battery-making facility, brought forward by the airport and Coventry City Council and backed by millions of pounds from the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA), was granted in March 2022.

Road Stop?
"Do nothing is not an option" is the message ahead of a council decision on effectively closing off a busy Kenilworth road next week.
Warwickshire County Council (WCC) will decide whether to create a 'prohibition of motor vehicles' section on Crewe Lane and whether the speed limit should be reduced to 30mph down from the existing national speed limit.
If approved, the works would effectively see a 99-metre break in the road outside Kenilworth Golf Club's entrance.
