Kenilworth has officially been named a 'toilet twinned' town as part of a campaign aimed to support some of the poorest communities across the world.

Run by the Toilet Twinning charity, the scheme is encouraging towns and villages across the UK to apply for the status in a bid to provide clean sanitation around the globe.

As well as applying for toilet twinned status, individuals can pay £60 to twin their toilet, with the money going to fund the construction of a much-needed basic toilet in deprived communities elsewhere in the world.

Kenilworth Soroptimists backed the local campaign, and have now announced the title has been made official.

Organisers said: "We were extremely happy to be able to present the certificate to Cllr Sam Louden-Cooke at the Town Assembly meeting as she finishes her year as Kenilworth Town Mayor.

"We'd like to thank Sam and the council for all their support in promoting this campaign, and of course to the various business and community service groups who have funded over 20 toilets all around Kenilworth.

"We really appreciate it as we know with the economic constraints, it is hard for businesses at the moment.

"It's such a demonstration of the generosity of Kenilworth that people are still willing to make a difference to the lives of especially women and girls who do not have a safe place to go to the loo."

Kenilworth Allotments already had its toilet twinned, but the Kenilworth Centre, Leyes Lane Pharmacy, Kenilworth Books and Curves have also all now been certified as twinned toilets.

Kenilworth Lions are also sponsoring an entire toilet block in Zambia.

Through the support of local groups some of the poorest communities in Bangladesh, Democratic Republic of Congo, Malawi, Afghanistan, Uganda, Honduras and Zambia have been given access to basic sanitation in their villages, schools and even a refugee camp.

Organisers added: "The town of Kenilworth has every right to feel flushed with success!"
