Kenilworth has officially achieved Plastic Free Community status after years of work by local volunteers.

Plastic Free Kenilworth has been working hard to complete the five 'Surfers Against Sewage' objectives to receive the recognition.

The initiative was started by Alison Firth when she was Mayor of Kenilworth in 2019, and as a team with Verity Thompson has now "blossomed in to a community wide endeavour" with a "powerful, solid and happy team making up our industrious steering group".

The five objectives were:

  1. Passing a resolution at town council level that the council would support plastic free endeavours
  2. We organise two events that our community can join in with
  3. Twelve local independent businesses have become plastic free business champions and counting
  4. Thirty plastic free community Allies have joined us in our quest and counting
  5. And now we have a solid steering group to propel us in to our future endeavours!

"And it doesn't stop here as we move on to bigger projects and continue to gain support for ridding our beautiful town of as much single use plastic as possible," Alison said.

"Watch this space!

"Massive thanks to all our businesses, allies, community groups, schools and individuals for your effort and support in this urgent and worthwhile quest to reduce our global choking plastic pollution crisis."
