Kenilworth Lions' Furniture Store has been hailed a 'climate champion' by the district council.

The Farmer Ward Road shop is the ninth recipient of the award by Warwick District Council for the work it has done reducing its carbon footprint.

WDC is on the lookout for businesses and individuals in south Warwickshire making small efforts to be more eco-friendly and "being conscious of your impact and doing something about it".

A statement from Kenilworth Lions on the WDC website says it is a "fundamental community benefit" of the store to reduce the amount of household furniture sent to landfill.

The store saved 1,627 pieces from going to landfill in the first half of 2022 - over 22 tonnes of goods.

The group has also long since helped recycle spectacles and hearing aids - recycling around 4,000 pairs of glasses each year.

"Lions nationally have now become the number one spectacle recycler in the UK. In the first six months of last year, Lions UK have donated one million pairs of spectacles," the group said.

"The spectacles are sent to Medico in France (owned by Lions of France) where they are checked, assessed and then sent to Third World Countries."

Kenilworth Lions is also working towards collecting used laptops and possibly mobile phones.

"Although the store has never been a massive user of electricity, a major step was taken to greatly reduce our electricity use by changing to LED lighting," the statement added.

"Fuel consumption by the two store vans is kept to a minimum with planned delivery/collection routes."
