Over 20 tonnes over waste caught on fire yesterday after a truck struck a power line which then fell onto the refuse in Welford-on-Avon.

Crews were called to the scene on Long Martson Road at lunchtime on Wednesday (July 26) to battle the blaze.

Locals were told to keep their windows closed due to the amount of smoke from the incident.

Kenilworth's crews arrived at 7pm as relief, as the incident continued.

While the fire is now under control, Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service said firefighters will remain at the scene throughout Thursday to monitor the situation.

A Kenilworth Fire Station spokesperson said: "We were mobilised last night at 7pm as a relief crew to an ongoing incident in Welford-on-Avon.

"The incident had been ongoing since lunchtime Wednesday and involved round 20 tonnes of waste on fire. The fire was caused by power lines which had fallen onto the refuse.

"Two fire engines have been at the incident overnight damping down and it is anticipated the incident will be ongoing throughout the day whilst deep seated fires are turned over and damped down."
