Kenilworth family in year-long battle with council after ‘cowboy’ contractors ‘ruin’ home

A Kenilworth family remain stuck in a "horrible" battle with the council after "cowboy" contractors have "ruined" their home with a botched repair.

Nub News reported last year how Nick Collett's utility room, new kitchen and conservatory had all been damaged by rainwater "gushing" in after his neighbour's guttering was badly repaired last summer.

Since then the problems have continued with contractors completing a "bodged" fix on the guttering which needs to be replaced once again.

Scaffolding was erected in the garden of his Dudley Road home, but after nearly two months, no work has started.

"They came out and replaced my expensive guttering with cheap guttering and they attached it to a waste pipe, the sewer pipe from the bathroom," he told Nub News.

"I was since told that was illegal. That was back in February.

"They have had scaffolding up now for seven weeks.

"So in the hot weather we can't open the back windows. There is scaffolding next door too, but there are no plans to fix anything any time soon.

"We share a pipe with next door, that's part of the issue."

The Colletts cannot open their windows upstairs due to the scaffolding

While the initial fix did stop the water coming in, Mr Collett says the council is yet to address the damage caused to inside his home.

The conservatory has been without electricity since January due to water damage.

Meanwhile the lino flooring needs replacing and the new kitchen needs refitting and repainting to fix the damage.

"It is just frustrating," Mr Collett added.

"The standard of this, how much money is the council wasting?

"The scaffolding has been up for seven weeks - how much is that costing?

"And it is all coming out of the taxpayers' pocket. They just don't do the job properly."

Mr Collett has also criticised the lack of communication from the council

As with last year, Mr Collett has criticised the council for its lack of communication saying he has only had a "one line email" since February.

He said he knows many local residents who have had similar problems.

He continued: "It is horrible, sitting in your back garden on a lovely day and there is all this scaffolding up.

"My eldest daughter cannot open her windows in the heat because the scaffolding is in the way.

"She has got fans permanently on the go.

"It is just not nice really, you work hard, get the kitchen renovated and then it is ruined by cowboys."

Warwick District Council has been approached for comment.
