Kenilworth councillor leaves party

A Kenilworth councillor will now stand as an independent having left the Green Party.
Cllr Lowell Williams said problems with the national party were behind the decision, but he was full of praise for the Green-Labour administration at Warwick District Council (WDC).
The Park Hill ward councillor, who was elected in 2023, previously served as the portfolio holder for decarbonisation at the Town Hall.
In a statement to Nub News, he said: "After careful consideration I decided to leave the Green Party and to serve the remainder of my term on Warwick District Council as an Independent councillor for Kenilworth Park Hill.
"My political principles and commitment to the local programme on which I was elected have not changed. However, I increasingly found myself out of step with the direction of the national party.
"I'm proud of the progress we made through the Green-led administration at Warwick District Council and have greatly valued working alongside colleagues to deliver positive change for our communities.
"My focus at the district council remains practical: reducing energy costs, protecting our environment, improving housing standards, and representing Park Hill residents."
The news comes months after fellow local councillor Josh Payne left the Liberal Democrats at WDC.
The Greens now have 14 councillors, and Labour have seven, leaving them below the number needed (23) for an outright majority at the council.
Warwick District Green Party has been approached for comment.
