A 2.5-1.5 win against Coventry A secured a first ever Coventry League Division One title for Kenilworth Chess Club last week.

Needing just a draw to overtake previous leaders Nuneaton A, the Kenilworth team made no mistake, recording yet another victory to clinch the first place spot.

Wins from England junior international Jude Shearsby, and correspondence chess senior international master Mike Donnelly, and a draw from team captain Mark Page gave Kenilworth a decisive advantage against Coventry.

Eight players represented the team during the season, and all contributed to the success, with club stalwarts Ben Graff, Bernard Rogers and Phil Wood joined by newcomers Javier Valdepenas and Bruce Baer.

The team won seven and drew one of its ten matches and beat every other team at least once, while racking up a 100 per cent record in its home matches at The Abbey Club.

With the club's A team in the Leamington League currently three points clear at the top of Division 1, Kenilworth has its sights set on an unprecedented double triumph.
