A man who neglected his starving dogs has been jailed and banned from keeping animals.

Scott Bambury, 39, of William McCool Close, has been sentenced to 14 weeks behind bars after a tip off from a local vet.

The RSPCA led the prosecution after the vet had been asked to put down the two dogs - named Lulu and My Boy.

Both dogs were underweight and with injuries of the tails down to the bone.

Lulu had a body condition score of just 1-2 out of nine. She had muscle wasting on her back and pelvis and her tail had bone showing at the end.

She also had pressure sores over the point of her pelvis where a lack of muscle and subcutaneous fat meant that the bones were rubbing against the ground when she sat. Her paws were soft as if they had never walked outside on the ground and the nails were overgrown

My Boy was in a similar "emaciated" state with a tail which showed signs of repeated trauma. His feet also had overgrown nails and very softened pads.

The vet added in their report to the court: "I have never seen animals with such soft paw pads over the age of six months old."

The vet carried out blood tests which showed the cause of their condition was as a result of malnutrition.

Bambury plead guilty to an animal welfare offence relating to two dogs.

He was sentenced to 14 weeks immediate imprisonment and a 12 year animal ban when he appeared at Coventry Magistrates Court on January 28.

Alongside the prison sentence and 12 year animal disqualification, which he cannot appeal for six years, he was also ordered to pay £350 costs and a £154 victim surcharge.

RSPCA inspector Ben Jones, who investigated for the animal welfare charity, said: "Making sure dogs are given a suitable diet and essential health care is an essential part of caring for a pet.

"Alongside the failure to be given enough food, leaving them severely underweight, they were left with untreated injuries to their tails, which exposed both Lulu and My Boy to pain and distress."
