Infamous Soham murderer Ian Huntley has died today (March 7) after an attack in prison last week.

The BBC and multiple other media outlets have reported Warwickshire triple murderer Anthony Russell is suspected to be behind the attack of Huntley in HMP Frankland on Thursday 26 February.

Former school caretaker Huntley - who murdered two 10-year old schoolgirls in Soham - was reportedly attacked with a makeshift weapon last week, and had his life support turned off in hospital on Friday.

Huntley was sentenced to 40 years behind bars for murdering schoolgirls Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman in Cambridgeshire in 2002.

Police have previously said a man in his 40s was "in detention" following the incident but had not been arrested "at this stage". They have not identified who this is.

Multiple publications have reported the attacker is suspected to be Russell who is serving his own life sentence for the murders of Julie Williams, her son David Williams and Nicole McGregor, whose body was found in woodland near the River Leam.

He admitted the murders and was later convicted of raping Miss McGregor - who was five months pregnant at the time - before strangling her to death.

Ms Williams and Mr Williams were murdered at separate flats in Coventry a few days before.

In the same week he travelled to Kenilworth where he robbed a 71-year-old woman, dragging her along the ground as he took £200 from her.

He later lured Miss McGregor to Newbold Comyn on the promise of drugs where he attacked her before dumping her body in the undergrowth.

Durham Constabulary confirmed an investigation is underway into the attack at HMP Frankland. The force is reportedly putting together a file to give to the Crown Prosecution Service.

Huntley was reportedly discovered lying in a pool of blood after the attack in the workshop.

He has been attacked in prison multiple times before.

In 2002 he killed two 10-year-old girls after luring the girls back to his home and leaving their bodies in a ditch in Suffolk.
