HS2 announces latest motorway closures
By James Smith 28th Jul 2026
HS2 has announced a weekend of motorway closures on parts of the M42 and M6 next month as work continues on major infrastructure projects linked to the high-speed rail line.
The closures will be in place from 9pm on Friday, 14 August until 5am on Monday, 17 August 2026.
Affected routes include the M42 between junctions 6 and 9 in both directions, the M6 junction 4a southbound link to the M42, and the M6 northbound junction 3a link to the M6 Toll.
The M6 Toll southbound from T2 will also be affected.
HS2 said the traffic management measures are needed to allow workers to safely continue installing beams for the M42 Motorway Box in Solihull, as well as progressing deck installation works on the Water Orton Viaducts in North Warwickshire.
A fully signed diversion route will be in place throughout the weekend closures.
Residents nearby may also notice low levels of noise from the works sites while the construction takes place.
HS2 has advised motorists to plan ahead and allow extra time for their journeys during the closure period.
More information about planned works along the route is available through the HS2 website's "In Your Area" pages.
