Green light for repair works needed at Stoneleigh Abbey
By James Smith 12th May 2026
Council planners have given the green light for repair works at Stoneleigh Abbey.
Warwick District Council has approved the works for the East Wing and the undercroft at the grade I listed building.
Plans put forward earlier this year said works include replacing and repairing "decaying" sandstone, repairing broken tiles, repairing the 17th-century downpipes, repairing vents, and fixing the drainage.
The extent of the repairs needed was discovered following the approval of other planning applications for the listed building.
"This application represents the logical continuation of the previously approved scheme, responding to conditions revealed during investigative works," plans said.
"The proposals are conservation-led, proportionate, and technically justified.
"They follow established best practice for historic buildings and align with the approach already endorsed by the Local Planning Authority.
"The works will safeguard important historic fabric and support the continued viable use of East Wing 3 and The Undercroft, and approval is therefore respectfully sought."
Signing off on the application, a council report said: "It is considered that the proposed works are acceptable, aiming to promote the longevity of the impacted areas and the heritage asset as a whole, with a remedial focus throughout.
"There will be a visual impact from the proposed repairs to the stonework however it is considered that these works have been kept to a minimum and will ensure the overall preservation of the listed building, with the benefits considered to balance any harm resulting in a neutral impact overall."
