Green light for Kenilworth pub's makeover

A Kenilworth pub has been given the full green light for a makeover.
Last year The Lion on Warwick Road was given advertising consent by Warwick District Council (WDC) for a series of new signs, and a repaint - although planners did only approve part of the application, taking issue with proposed "excessive" and "harmful" modern signs.
However, the scheme did not go ahead as the local authority refused permission for a separate listed building application for the grade II listed building. This application was refused for the same issues with the modern sign designs.
As such, pub owner Greene King had to submit a fresh application to WDC, taking on the feedback from last year.
And now, that application has been approved.
Signing off on the plans, a council report said: "It is considered that the works are minor and result in with no disruption to historic fabric, with the signage and lighting proposed considered to be typical of a public house.
"The works proposed are considered to maintain the special historic and architectural interest of the heritage asset and the overall impact of the proposal is deemed to be neutral."

Plans show six new signs and associated lighting will be installed at The Lion, with designs "identical" to those given advertisement consent last year.
The application said: "In consideration of the design, finish and amount, the proposed new and replacement signage and external lighting is assessed to have a neutral impact upon the significance of the building with the key features of special interest conserved.
"The works whilst modest support trade at the premises and thus support the viability of the business and the retention of the listing building in its existing and long-established use."
