Free food up for grabs as new Aldi nears opening in Balsall Common
By Emily Griffin 26th Aug 2026
Some lucky shoppers in Balsall Common will be able to get free fresh fruit and vegetables when the brand-new Aldi store opens next week.
The supermarket on Kenilworth Road will officially open at 8am on Thursday, September 3, with Paralympic silver medallist sprinter Ali Fewins joining staff for the celebrations.
As part of the opening event, Aldi will be giving away complimentary bags of fresh fruit and vegetables for the first 30 shoppers from its popular Super 6 range.
Ali will join store manager Malcolm Upton and his team to cut the ribbon and welcome customers through the doors on opening morning.
Mr Upton said: "We can't wait to open the doors to the new store in Balsall Common.
"It's set to be a special day and having Paralympic hero Ali Fewins join us will make it a morning to remember."

The new store will be run by Malcolm and a team of 30 colleagues recruited from the local community.
Customers will be able to shop Aldi's range of fresh British meat, Specially Selected products, exclusive beers, wines and spirits, as well as a Food to Go section and the retailer's popular Specialbuys.
Ali Fewins said: "I'm so excited to be opening Aldi's new store; it will be great to chat to customers and a lovely way for me to thank Aldi for its support of ParalympicsGB."
The opening forms part of Aldi's continued investment in local communities, with the supermarket recently being named the UK's Cheapest Supermarket for 2025 by consumer group Which? for the fifth consecutive year.
The new store is also encouraging local charities and food banks to register with community platform Neighbourly, allowing them to collect surplus food and perishable products, including fruit, vegetables and baked goods, seven days a week.
The Aldi store on Kenilworth Road will be open from 8am to 10pm Monday to Saturday and from 10am to 4pm on Sundays.
