A fire at the archaeological remains in Abbey Fields is being treated as arson by police.

Fire crews were called to the blaze at the construction site on Tuesday (June 13) at around 6.30pm where a can of petrol had been set alight.

Following the incident - which left the remains covered in scorch marks - an appeal for witnesses has been released.

"Warwickshire Police are asking anyone to get into contact with them regarding an arson attack on a protected monument at Abbey Fields, Kenilworth between 1815hrs and 1850hrs on Tuesday 13 June 2023," a Kenilworth Watch statement said.

"Offender/s lit a jerry can full of petrol and placed the can onto the wall of a protected monument causing damage through scorching.

"Apart from the arson and criminal damage aspects of this activity the danger to life posed by a full can of petrol being set fire is severe and could have serious and even tragic consequences."

Warwick District Council recently confirmed to Nub News that a new design is being drawn up for the new leisure centre, to incorporate the remains discover under the old swimming pool.
