Videos shared on social media have shown a number of far right protestors out in Solihull this evening (July 4).

Clips show protestors - who mainly appear to be white, middle-aged men - holding banners saying "united against illegal immigration" and "save our kids".

They show a group of around 100 people moving past Solihull Police Station to the town centre.

Shopping centre Touchwood has closed to the public following police advice.

An update from Solihull Police late in the evening said: "We currently have officers in Hermitage Road, Solihull, after receiving a number of calls about a large gathering.

"We're there making sure everyone stays safe until the numbers disperse.

"There was a separate gathering involving up to 60 people in Solihull town centre earlier this evening. This passed off without any incident."

The protests follow days of incidents across the country, including in Liverpool, Sunderland and Southport.

Other social media accounts have warned locals in Solihull to "stay vigilant" and stay indoors.

Shirley South Councillor and Green group leader on Solihull Council Max McLoughlin said: "'Protesters' did appear in Solihull.

"They located themselves next to a church and war memorial.

"They were moved on quickly enough.

"I and another councillor went to check the disturbance. They got the cinema and shopping centre closed down as they were moved on.

"Everyone who had cinema tickets wasn't happy with their efforts.

"Intimidating members of our community doesn't help anyone. Your hate is not welcome in Solihull.

"If you want to make this a better place to live, there are lots of constructive groups you can join. Do that instead."

Meanwhile a statement from Touchwood said: "Following advice from West Midlands Police, we have made the decision to close the centre this evening as a precaution.

"The safety and well being of our guests is always our top priority.

"We will advise across our social channels when we are ready to open again."

West Midlands Police has been contacted for further information.
