Explosive experts carry out controlled explosion in Leek Wootton

Officers from Warwickshire Police have helped explosive experts safely deal with three flares in a controlled explosion near Leek Wootton today (February 23).

Police received a number of items yesterday including three flares which needed to be dealt with safely as they were deemed a dangerous item.

Explosive experts were called and police assisted them to find a secure location to complete the controlled explosion.

A number of residents in Kenilworth and Leek Wootton reported this morning that they had heard what was believed to be an explosion in the area, it is assumed at this stage that the controlled explosion was the cause of this.

A Warwickshire Police spokesperson said to Nub News: "Several items were surrendered to officers yesterday including three flares which were classed as dangerous and explosives experts were called – no offences recorded.

"Officers assisted in finding a safe rural location where they could carry out a controlled explosion."

They added: "officers suggested a location and then left them to it."

An MOD spokesperson said: "We can confirm an Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal team was called out to the vicinity of Warwickshire Justice Centre today at the request of local police.

"The EOD team carried out a controlled explosion in the local area."
