Drivers have been reported to court for going the wrong way along the A46 and nearly hitting emergency service vehicles during an incident over the weekend.

The dual carriageway was shut in both directions around Stoneleigh in the early hours of Sunday morning (June 1) while police and ambulances dealt with a crash involving multiple vehicles.

Warwickshire's Operational Patrol Unit said most people waited patiently for the road to reopen, but said some drivers decided to ignore the closure and nearly cause another incident.

A police statement said: "A big thank you to the majority of those who sat and waited patiently in the A46 closure in the early hours on this morning (1 June), whilst we responded to multiple collisions at the Stoneleigh junction.

"Sadly a few took it upon themselves to ignore the road closure and then drive the wrong way back up the A46, nearly colliding with responding emergency vehicles.

"They have been reported to court."

The A46 was reportedly closed for several hours while police dealt with the incident.
