Covid-19 figures for Kenilworth show a steady increase in infection rates

Covid-19 cases in Kenilworth have continued to rise as the area remains above the national average for infection rates.

The leader of Warwick District Council Cllr Andrew Day has described the current surge as "serious" and has urged residents to "do their bit" in fighting the virus.

Official government data shows that in the seven days before June 30 the infection rate for Warwick district was 438.3 per 100,000 people. This is a significant rise from 240 per 100,000 in the week leading to 23 June.

However, the highest infection rates in the region are in Warwick and Leamington. In particular Leamington Brunswick which has a seven day rolling infection rate of 621.7 per 100,000 people.

This compares to figures in Kenilworth:

- Kenilworth West: 295.3 per 100,000

- Kenilworth South: 238.1 per 100,000

- Kenilworth East: 174.4 per 100,000

The rolling seven day average for the UK as a whole is currently 229.9 per 100,000 people.

Council leader's response

In his weekly update, Cllr Day warned residents about the rising number of cases.

He said: "The new surge in Covid cases is serious, affecting all sectors of our local community, with a significant number of school children being required to self-isolate, as well some local businesses and community services ordered to close, or reduce their operating hours.

"We're grateful to all those who are spearheading the response, by setting-up and running mobile testing units, distributing testing kits and continuing to provide business advice and support."

Cllr Day has also reminded residents that free lateral flow tests can be ordered, or picked up from a local pharmacy.

This comes as the local LFT site in Leamington closed at the end of June.

Cllr Day added: "Let's also do our bit to help contain this surge by keeping-up the safe practices we know all too well."
