Some 70 locals have backed plans for a village pub to give a makeover to its garden.

Spencerthorpe Holdings Ltd has asked Warwick District Council for permission to extend the patio at the Three Horseshoes Inn on Spring Hill, Bubbenhall.

If approved, the plans would also allow the business to keep two patios it has already installed.

Plans show the patio area would be extended by an extra 10 metres by two metres, and run along the side of the pub into the parking area.

The gazebos currently sit to the front of the building.

A new ramp with handrail for disabled access would also be included in the design.

While the application has garnered a lot of community support - including the backing of Bubbenhall Parish Council - planners at the district council have recommended the application be refused.

A council report explained: "When considering the scheme as a whole, the development is considered to represent 'inappropriate development' within the green belt and the proposal is considered to introduce harm by definition and harm to the openness by reason of the scale and location of development.

"When considering the benefits of the scheme officers do not consider that these would amount to 'very special circumstances'.

"This harm is afforded substantial weight within the planning balance.

"The development is also considered to result in harm to the character and appearance of the streetscene and the wider conservation area, to which substantial weight is afforded."

Objections have been raised by highways and conservation officers.

The application will go before the district council's planning committee on Tuesday 13 January and councillors will vote on whether to approve it or not.

The application said: "The public house is a recognised community asset, serving as a focal point for social activity, local events, and community cohesion.

"The proposed works are intended to: enhance the use of outdoor space for year-round enjoyment; improve inclusivity through accessible design; ensure all interventions are compatible with the historic and environmental sensitivities of the conservation area."

The scheme has already received a huge number of notices of support from people in Bubbenhall and the surrounding areas.
