Council reveals plans to demolish special school and replace it with 25 houses
Plans to demolish a local special school and replace it with houses have been revealed by Coventry City Council.
The local authority wants to knock down Woodfield Primary School on Stoneleigh Road and build 25 houses in its place.
Its secondary school site, located on Hawthorn Lane, could also be demolished and replaced by a further 129 houses as the council plans to build a much bigger SEND school at the former Woodlands Academy site on Broad Lane.
Ofsted recently said Woodfield was taking 'effective action' to overcome its inadequate rating.
And the news comes as Warwickshire County Council opened its new SEND school in Ash Green, The Warwickshire Academy, last week.
Coventry council's planning statement said: "The planning application is related to proposals to accommodate a new flagship school to meet the growing demand for places for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) at the former Woodlands Academy School site located on Broad Lane in Coventry.
"The Woodlands SEND School will combine the facilities of the Woodfield Primary School located on Stoneleigh Road, and Woodfield Secondary School located on Hawthorn Lane.
"These sites will be surplus to requirements as part of the proposals and separate outline planning applications are being progressed for their disposal for residential development, and the capital land receipts will be used fund the Woodlands SEND School."
The Stoneleigh Road school, which lies within the Kenilworth Road Conservation Area, would be replaced mostly by three-bed houses.
And the council said at least a quarter of these would be affordable homes.
Planning applications have also been submitted to redesign Woodlands Academy and to demolish the Hawthorn Lane school.
