The town council is working on plans that could see a new pedestrian crossing installed near Kenilworth Castle.

Councillors this month met with English Heritage - which manages the castle - to consider potential options for the scheme, and last week voted to set up a dedicated task and finish group to oversee the project.

A council report said improved pedestrian access to the castle was included in the 2018 neighbourhood plan, but has yet to be taken up.

"There are currently no clear and safe pedestrian routes to enter the castle on Castle Road," the report said.

"All current pedestrian routes involve crossing the busy road without a pedestrian crossing, and there are no safe walkways on the castle side of Castle Road."

The council has not decided exactly where a new crossing would go, and is at this stage considering options.

The new group will consult the local councils, English Heritage and residents on the plans, with a view to launching a feasibility study into the possible new crossing.

Speaking at last week's Kenilworth Town Council meeting, Cllr Zoe Leventhal gave an update following an initial meeting with English Heritage.

"We considered lots of issues and potential options," she said.

"We have agreed that it is an opportunity for English Heritage and the town council to work together to address what has actually been in the neighbourhood plan since 2018 which is that it should be a priority to improve access by foot from the town to the castle.

"English Heritage expressed a real enthusiasm to work with us on this."
