'Community picnic' announced to celebrate 450th anniversary of Elizabeth I's visit to Kenilworth

Kenilworth locals are invited to Kenilworth Castle this July to celebrate the 450th anniversary of Elizabeth I's visit to Kenilworth.
During the summer of 1575, in her longest ever visit to a courtier's residence, Elizabeth I spent nearly three weeks as a guest of the Earl of Leicester, Robert Dudley.
Dudley laid on lavish festivities throughout Elizabeth's stay in a final attempt to woo her, ten years after his original marriage proposal, on Christmas Day in 1565.
A series of events have been announced to celebrate the major anniversary this summer, with Kenilworth Town Council set to host a community picnic at the castle on Saturday 12 July.
Elizabethan fancy dress is encouraged for the event, which is free to castle pass holders.
The day will give families the chance to see the castle's new art installation - Wicked Game by Lindsey Mendick - which has been commissioned for the 450th anniversary.
A 'Tudor Knights School' will also be hosted showing off medieval and Tudor weapons and armour.

Come and join Kenilworth Town Council as we host an exclusive residents picnic at Kenilworth Castle in celebration of Queen Elizabeth I visit to this iconic venue 450 years ago," the town council said.
"Bring your picnics, blankets and the sunshine as we celebrate this historic visit in style! The Castle's Ice Cream Van will also be in attendance!
"Entry is free with your Kenilworth Castle Residents Pass.
"If you wish to bring family members who do not live locally, or, you do not hold a residents pass yet live in the town, we would ask you to make a donation of £5 per person on the evening at the gate. Payment will be by card only.
"Entry is also free to English Heritage Members who live within the town. Please ensure you bring your membership cards with you for access to the event."
The event will also feature theatre and music by 'A Book of Portraits' as they "create their own extravagant spectacle", taking inspiration from Dudley's big show in 1575!.
"Expect traditional music and frivolity as you see their troupe of travelling bards, minstrels and vagabonds pull out all the stops to try and impress Good Queen Bess," the council continued.
"All washed down by the fabulous 'East Chase Distillers' who will be hosting a full bar of local draught beers, wines and spirits."
The Talisman Theatre has also announced a series of productions as part of the 450th anniversary celebrations. See more here.
