A community car club has been launched to help Kenilworth residents save money and the environment.

The club will see members lend their car at a reasonable price for short period of time to other locals.

The Kenilworth Community Car Club will work as a closed-loop group within the Hiyacar network.

Its membership is limited to Kenilworth (CV8) residents only, to ensure that all cars and borrowers are locally based for convenience and peace of mind.

Hiyacar, one of the country's leading peer-to-peer arrangers, provides the club with booking, payment and insurance services through its digital platform, thus enabling members to borrow and lend cars legally and securely.

And with a recent Nerdwallet survey finding the average person spends £300 a month to run a car, the club's founders said it was a perfect way to manage with one car fewer on your drive, go greener and to save money.

Cllr Andrew Milton, founder member of the club, said: "I may spend a lot of time talking about cycling but I'm also a car driver.

"Most of the time my car is sat on the drive which seems a real waste. Why shouldn't someone else get use out of it? Hopefully this initiative will go some way to providing access to a car when people really need one."

Residents can join the club by signing up on the Hiyacar website. Then they should email their name and address to [email protected] asking to join the Kenilworth Community Car Club.

Jan Burnell, chair of Kenilworth All Together Greener (KATG), added: "It was great that among the many car club options the working group explored was this off-the-shelf solution.

"It has the potential to provide convenient mobility at an affordable price as well as to reduce the number of parked cars on the street. Something that would be a win-win for people and planet.

"The club is free to join so I hope that lots of people sign up and find it really useful."

Cllr Milton will be talking more about the club at the 'Inspiring Action' event being run at Kenilworth Methodist Church by KATG on Saturday (October 15) morning.
