The popular Boxing Day duck race is sent to return to Kenilworth's Abbey Fields this Christmas, Kenilworth Lions has confirmed.

The 2022 edition had to be cancelled due to the works around the swimming pools, with organisers saying it would not be safe to host the event at Finham Brook.

And while there is still a building site in the park, Kenilworth Lions is now able to safely hold the fundraising event on December 26 2023 at 12noon.

Space will however be restricted due to the ongoing works in Abbey Fields.

The duck race was also cancelled in 2020 due to the pandemic and the following year was pushed back to New Year's Day after the river was deemed unsafe. This means the 2023 instalment could be the first Boxing Day event since 2019.

"We are very excited to start our planning," organisers told Nub News.

"Our 1,500 yellow ducks will be getting their pre race bath soon.

"Duck Race tickets will be on sale at the Kenilworth Christmas Lights switch on and on published dates at Waitrose and Sainsburys.

"It's all good fun and for a good cause. We do ask everyone to remember this is for fun, and the ducks may get stuck in the branches on the side of the brook!"

Kenilworth Lions will also be running its second corporate Duck Race, having first launched the initiative in 2021.

Using the larger decoy ducks, local businesses are encouraged to decorate their own entry.

With each costing £50, the extra race also raises a lot of money for the nominated charity of the winning duck.

After last year's race was cancelled, Kenilworth Lions ran a 'Royal Duck Progress' during the Coronation celebrations in May, with the plastic ducks being taken on a tour of the town.
