'Both positive and negative' feedback for HS2's planned 425-metre long viaduct in Balsall Common
HS2 has said it has received mixed feedback on plans to build a 425-metre long viaduct in Balsall Common.
The high speed rail developer, which has issued new pictures of the structure, has recently concluded a public consultation on the structure.
HS2 said the viaduct has been designed to minimise flood risk and will be integrated into the landscape to give pedestrians maximum visibility.
It added that architects had taken into account the local ecology and wildlife, with images intended to show what it will look like in ten years time.
Andy de Bell, community engagement manager at Balfour Beatty VINCI, the company responsible for building part of HS2, spoke to Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council earlier this week.
He said: "The design has attempted to minimise the scale of the piers that support the structure and make them feel less massive as we possibly can.
"Considerable amount of attention has been paid to the abutments, which are where the viaduct comes back to the ground, to try and blend those into the landscape as best as we possibly can.
"We are also trying to build a better ecological environment so greater connectivity for wildlife in the area as we restore the environment after construction.
"The images show what it will look like in the 10-15 year horizon with planning in and around it. Although it's not a complete tree screen, our landscape architects have considered the nature of tree planting and hedgerows in the area and they don't tend to be continuous tree screens, but rather a mixture of hedges."
HS2 said it received 93 feedback forms alongside 238 pieces of advice at community consultations earlier this year.
Over 200 attendees spoke to 16 HS2 experts at the events at the British Legion Hall, while 15 Year 9 students were given a tour and provided a "unique perspective" on the designs.
The Local Democracy Reporting Service has contacted HS2 for a copy of these feedback forms.
Cllr Diane Howell said there was "an awful lot of concern" within the community regarding the designs.
She asked HS2: "There was an awful lot of concern amongst the community around some elements of the design, particularly around the material used in the noise barriers.
"You've obviously had a lot of feedback, some positive some negative – will you be bringing refined designs for further community engagement?"
Mr de Bell confirmed that there would be further engagement with the Balsall Common community once feedback had been processed.
