Three local councillors have voiced their "anger, disappointment and serious concerns" that a busy Balsall Common road could remain closed until April for HS2 works.

Lavender Hall Lane was shut in February this year for the new bridge which will carry the road over the rail line to be installed.

It was originally due to reopen late in 2026 but the reopening date has been pushed back

Locals were told this week the delay is because more "utility diversions" and "further highway works" have been "identified".

In response, Councillors Terry Baker, Heather Delaney and Tony Dicicco have written to HS2, its contractors and Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council to demand "urgent answers, greater accountability and every possible effort to get the road open sooner".

"When the road closed in February 2026, residents were told it would reopen at the end of November," the letter said.

"Now, after months of disruption, they face the prospect of another four months or more of inconvenience.

"This is simply not good enough."

The latest update from HS2 said Lavender Hall Lane may remain closed until Sunday 11 April.

It is understood this date is a contingency, and there is still the hope the works will be finished by February 11.

The letter continued: "We understand the need to account for winter weather and other potential setbacks.

"However, we do not want April to become the default reopening date simply because permission has been requested to keep the road closed until then.

"If 11 February remains achievable, we expect every reasonable effort to be made to meet that date, or ideally reopen the road sooner."

The three ward councillors have questioned why the issues - including asbestos being found and environment restrictions around Bayley's Brook - were not identified earlier.

They have also asked for a "detailed explanation" behind the delays and what works remain.

"The impact on local people cannot be overstated," the letter continued.

"Lavender Hall Lane is an important route between Balsall Common and Berkswell.

"Its closure has forced residents to make longer journeys to work, take children to school, attend appointments and carry out everyday activities.

"Local businesses have also been affected.

"And this is far from the only disruption our communities are experiencing."

In its updated closure notice for Lavender Hall Lane, HS2 simply wrote: "During construction works to build the new Lavender Hall Lane overbridge and the associated road realignment, we have identified a number of additional activities that are required to complete the works.

"These include utility diversions, further highway works including street lighting and works at Bayley's Brook."
