'Action is needed now' - council officers visit 'dangerous' Kenilworth road

By James Smith   19th Jan 2026

The councillor in charge of Warwickshire's roads has been given a first-hand view of the "dangers" on a busy Kenilworth road.

Residents of the Kenilworth Gate housing development welcomed Warwickshire County Council (WCC) staff and highways portfolio holder Cllr Jennifer Warren to Leamington Road on Friday (16 January) as the push for a new crossing and reduced speed limit continues.

Locals presented a petition at Shire Hall in December calling for the works on road into Kenilworth, years after development of the new housing estate began.

Accompanied by local councillors Richard Dickson and Alison Insley, the residents showed the council staff the problems they say are caused by the 40mph speed limit on Leamington Road, the absence of a footpath between the entry to Kenilworth Gate and St John's gyratory, not having a pedestrian crossing over Leamington Road and the absence of traffic calming measures in the road.

The WCC representatives were also shown the dirt track created on the side of Leamington Road where there is no pavement - but where residents walk if they cannot cross.

Locals want the speed limit reduced to 30mph.

Dr. Rocco Coppejans said: "Residents remain extremely concerned that no time lines exist for fixing this problem or providing a temporary solution.

"This is despite the fact that houses have been occupied for more than 2.5 years and residents have to risk their lives every day because of an issue that should have been addressed before a single house was occupied.

"We continue to urge the council and Charles Church (the housing developer) to fix this problem as quickly as possible and hope that a solution is implemented before someone dies or is seriously injured."

When the petition was presented in December, residents were told a permanent fix for the road may not come until 2027.

The town's MP Sir Jeremy Wright has also backed the campaign.

"The visit by council staff and Cllr Warren was very useful in showing the need for urgent solutions to the current problems experienced on a daily basis by Kenilworth Gate residents," said Councillors Dickson and Insley.

"The eventual completion of the spine road through the Thickthorn development and the signalisation of the St John's gyratory will help, but these works are too far in the future.

"Action is needed now."
