Angry motorists have been calling 999 today (November 5) to complain about the M40 being closed following a major crash.
The motorway has been shut between Warwick and Gaydon southbound for much of today after a lorry left the northbound carriageway and hit two cars going in the opposite direction.
The incident has caused major delays on the local road network also.
But Warwickshire Police said its call centre had been forced to field complaints from angry drivers.
"We would like to thank all who have been patient and understanding through the traffic disruption caused by the serious collision on the M40 last night," the force said.
"A minority of people have elected to call 999 this morning to express their frustration at being stuck in traffic as Highways England work to repair the carriageway.
"This has placed a strain on our call centre and at points our call handlers have been subjected to abuse.
"Please be reminded that 999 is for emergencies - and those lines must be kept clear for those in need or urgent help.
"Anyone placing false calls to 999 and abusing staff may be investigated for wasting police time and any relevant public order offences."
The M40 is now open once again.
