Abbey Fields lake nearly dried up - council offers reassurance

The lake in Kenilworth's Abbey Fields is nearly completely dried up, prompting concerns from members of the public about the wellbeing of the wildlife.
Patches of water do remain, but locals are able to see almost all of the bottom of the lake.
The situation is similar to that in the extreme heat of 2022 where local residents took it upon themselves to keep adding water to the lake to keep the fish there alive.
The level in the neighbouring brook has also dropped.
As temperatures hit 34C in Warwickshire today, Warwick District Council has offered reassurances to Kenilworth residents.
"Our green spaces team has met with Cyril Bennis from Swan Rescue and some local residents to assess the situation at the lake," the council said.
"The swans and cygnets are currently looking healthy.
"As long as they stay hydrated, there are no concerns. If the lake completely dries up, then they have the option of the brook nearby which is accessible to them.

"The council asks that dogs are kept under control around the lake, as the lower water levels mean the lake is more easily accessible and this increases the possibility of wildlife being attacked.
"We will continue to monitor the situation and if necessary, we can relocate the cygnets with the adult swans."
