Kenilworth's Conservative councillors are saying yes to the 20mph speed limit, and no to the speed humps and tables proposed for Warwick Road.

In March Warwickshire County Council started a consultation for residents to share their views on proposed changes to Kenilworth's main thoroughfare. This followed the council's temporary 20mph speed limit along Warwick Road that was put into place in 2020.

The results of the consultation are expected to be released later this month.

Newly elected Conservative town and county Councillor Richard Spencer said that during his election campaign he spoke to a number of residents on the issue of speed limits and speed bumps across the town, not just on Warwick Road.

He said: "The reduction in speed limit is indeed welcomed by the majority, while the traffic calming measures have proved to be very controversial.

"Some residents have spent an enormous amount of time providing qualitative and quantitative evidence to WCC highways department demonstrating that the measures would be counter productive for the town centre and the residential areas."

He added: "I'm a strong believer in reducing speed limits in our town, and traffic calming does have a part to play in managing lower speed limits. However, speed bumps on Warwick Road is not appropriate and not the answer."

Fellow Conservative town and county Councillor John Cooke and town Councillor Michael Coker have shared Cllr Spencer's views, saying that they support the reduced speed limit along Warwick Road, but not the calming measures.

Cllr Spencer has also formally written to the relative parties at WCC's highways department, stating that whilst the majority of Kenilworth residents support the permanent 20mph speed limit between the clock tower and Waverley Road junction, Cllr Cooke, Cllr Coker and he, do not support the traffic calming proposals.

Cllr Spencer said: "Funds would better be spent researching and implementing reduced speed limited and traffic calming activities in the towns residential side roads. Something which Kenilworth residents overwhelming support."

A number of residents have also supported a petition to Warwickshire County Council to put 20mph speed limits across the centre of Kenilworth, beyond Warwick Road. More details on the petition can be found here.
