2,000 swimmers have visited Warwick District Council-owned leisure facilities since last Monday, latest statistics reveal.

District gyms have also received 4,479 visits since their reopening on April 12 according to the district council. However, Kenilworth's outdoor swimming pool remains closed to the public.

Indoor leisure facilities were able to allow the public in once more last week, following phase two of the Government's roadmap out of lockdown.

The district council has said that the return of classes and school groups once more meant the indoor pools in Leamington, Warwick and Kenilworth reached their new capacities.

Gareth Wagg, contract manager at centre-operators Everyone Active, commented: "It's been great to welcome all of our customers back this week and see the enthusiasm they have shown for getting back into their workout and swimming routines.

"The health and safety of all visitors to the centres remains our top priority and our staff continue to work extremely hard to ensure that the strict social distancing, cleaning and hygiene protocols remain in place.

"Swimming is a potentially life-saving skill so we've been particularly looking forward to seeing the return of school groups following an absence of many months."

However, the lido in Kenilworth, which could have reopened from March 29, is yet to welcome a single swimmer in 2021. This year will be the 125th anniversary of outdoor swimming in the town.

When contacted by Kenilworth Nub News about the reopening of the lido, a WDC spokesperson said: "I can confirm that no decision has yet been taken on the reopening of this pool.

"Officers and councillors are keeping the situation regarding the recovery roadmap under review and how this will impact on the further reopening of sports and leisure facilities. It is a classic example of basing decisions on data not dates."

The Kenilworth Lido Campaign Group has set out measures which it believes could help to get the lido open as soon as possible. These can be read in full here.
