GALLERY: Kenilworth gathers to mark VE Day commemorations

Nearly 1,000 locals gathered at Kenilworth Castle last night (May 8) to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day.
With the sun setting, the event brought singing, speeches and the beacon lighting to the town's main tourist attraction.
Organised by Kenilworth Town Council, the event began with the march of the cadets of 496 squadron before the event was introduced by the Vice Lord-Lieutenant of Warwickshire Pal Sanghera.

Children from St John's Primary and Prriorsfield sang a number of hymns and songs, with members of the Talisman Youth Theatre sharing excerpts from Peter James' novel 'Kenilworth Kids in Wartime'.
Results of the shop window competition were announced and the gathering crowd was treated to a performance by piper Rhys Fitter, formally of the 1st Battalion Royal Guards.

Reflections of VE Day was read by Alfred Dearing and the Kenilworth Twinning Association also read 'Victory in Europe' bin English, French, German and Italian.
MP Sir Jeremy Wright also said a few words, as did Mayor of Kenilworth Cllr Alan Chalmers before the beacon on Strong Tower was light by Matt Bulford of English Heritage.
Tealights were handed out to attendees, to be turned on as the beacon was lit and the sun went down.
