Sir Jeremy Wright has been named the new shadow attorney general by Rishi Sunak.

The re-elected Kenilworth and Southam MP survived a Conservative cull last week, leaving him the only Tory MP in Warwickshire.

But with 12 of Mr Sunak's previous top team losing their seats, and David Cameron resigning, the new shadow cabinet was announced yesterday (July 8).

Sir Jeremy takes over from Labour's Emily Thornberry - a surprise omission from the new cabinet - on the frontbench of the opposition.

He previously was the attorney general under Lord Cameron and Theresa May from July 2014 to July 2018.

Sir Jeremy, who has been the town's MP since 2005, now has a majority of more than 6,000, albeit significantly down from his cushion of more than 20,000 in 2019.

He mustered 19,395 votes to beat Labour's Cat Price (12,821) and Liberal Democrat candidate Jenny Wilkinson (10,464) last week.

In a video shared with constituents on Monday, Sir Jeremy said: "Thank you for giving me the opportunity to continue serving as the Member of Parliament for Kenilworth and Southam.

"I know for that for many people who made the decision to vote Conservative last Thursday, it was not an easy decision to make.

"And I know too that the decision some people did make to vote Conservative was based on the level of trust they had in me as an individual.

"I am profoundly grateful for that but also very conscious I need to go on to repay that trust.

"Whether you voted for me or not, I will do my very best to serve as the member of parliament for this constituency."
