Local expert Khiyam Hussain from Hear Better With Us explains how hearing aids could help reduce the symptoms of tinnitus.

What is Tinnitus?

Tinnitus is a sound that is heard in the head or ears without an external source.

It is often described as a tone, ringing, hissing, whistling or static sound but other types of sounds can also be heard.

Tinnitus may be continuous or intermittent and the intensity can vary from mild background noise to loud noise which can be very disruptive.

Most people have experienced some form of tinnitus at some point, if the environment was quiet enough - but it may have only lasted for a couple of minutes.

Causes of Tinnitus

Tinnitus can be caused by a variety of factors, including, hearing loss, noise exposure, ear wax build-up, infections or other blockages, some medications, stress and anxiety as well as other health conditions.

Impact of Tinnitus

The impact of tinnitus varies widely among individuals.

Some people may find it mildly annoying, while others may experience significant distress, leading to difficulties with concentration, sleep, and overall quality of life.

Management and Treatment

While there is no cure for tinnitus, several strategies can help manage the symptoms.

Tinnitus therapies are a means of learning to cope with tinnitus, normally by either reducing awareness of the sound or by improving negative responses to it.

Other strategies, include masking sound with other background noise so that it becomes less noticeable.

Can Hearing Aids Help Reduce Symptoms?

Yes, we know from experience that hearing aids can be very effective at reducing or suppressing tinnitus symptoms when there is a hearing loss present, however mild.

Hearing aids not only, reduce tinnitus symptoms by correcting hearing loss, they help reduce stress and anxiety, by improving the ability to hear and understand conversations.

This helps enhance quality of life, in turn reducing the awareness of tinnitus.

Modern hearing aids may also come with built-in sound therapy options.

These devices can generate white noise or other soothing sounds that can help mask the tinnitus and make it less noticeable.
