What is actually going to change at the A46 Stoneleigh Junction?

Already underway, major redevelopment works at the Stoneleigh Junction of the A46 will see at least £38 million invested in the local road network.

The works are hoped to be completed by summer 2022.

Having started in December 2020, the developments to the junction are not to be confused with the consultation that could see a new link road from Dalehouse Lane roundabout to the University of Warwick.

What are the plans for the junction?

Replacing the current slip roads between the A46 and the Stoneleigh Road, a new roundabout will be constructed with a second bridge installed over the carriageways. The existing bridge at the junction will be incorporated into the design.

Diagrams of before, and after can be seen in the gallery at the top of this article.

The Dalehouse Lane roundabout will also be increased in size to accommodate the expected increase in traffic.

The junction's roundabout will also incorporate "a shared-use pedestrian and cycle facility on both sides of the junction, with toucan crossings, for crossing the slip roads."

What has happened so far?

WCC has thus far been focusing on preparing the site for the construction works.

Vehicular access, off the Dalehouse roundabout, will be plain to see for anybody who has used the junction.

Permanent fencing has also been put in place around the perimeter of the site, and an old water main under Finham Brook has been grouted up.

Drainage and removal of the top soil has also been completed.

What happens next?

Work on the new roundabout is planned to follow four phases.

The first phase will see the construction of the new northbound entry and southbound exit slip roads. A lot of this construction is expected to take place off site first before "limited traffic management" is put in place for the installations.

Phase two will see resurfacing work done for the new slip roads and other roads in the area. This will clearly necessitate road closures.

Phase three will focus on construction and installation of the new bridges. Again, a lot of this will take place off site. However, narrow lane operations and road closures will be inevitable for the final installations.

Phase four will involve final maintenance works completed, and the realignment of the northbound exit slip road. Lane closures will be required.

No date-specific timeline has been given for the four phases of the work.
