Weekend Walks: Kenilworth Heritage Trail

By James Smith

8th Oct 2021 | Local News

Each month we will be sharing a circular walk in and around Kenilworth with directions and photos.

The first walk we have chosen has been taken from Kenilworth Town Council's 'Visit Kenilworth' website.

The Kenilworth 'Heritage Trail' starts by the war memorial at the top of Abbey Fields, and takes walkers to the major historical spots within the town.

The map and information guide can be downloaded here.

The route:

  1. Start at the war memorial and head down Forrest Road and then down Borrowell Road.
  1. Here you will pass the site of a former WW2 air raid shelter (on the right).
  1. Cross Borrowell Road and then turn left at the post box and then bear right to the woodlands. Take the higher path through the woods and then turn right at the end towards the castle.
  1. Once you reach the castle take the lower path behind the ticket office, keeping along the path at the foot of the castle walls.
  1. Continue right around the castle, following the moat path back to Castle Green. Cross the road and head up Castle Hill.
  1. Continue up Castle Hill taking in the pound until you reach High Street.
  1. Pass the Virgins and Castle and head straight along New Street.

  1. Continue along New Street to Coventry Road where (on the left hand side) you can see Parliament Piece by passing the footpath and taking the gate.
  1. Once you have stopped to admire Parliament Piece, return to New Street and turn right along Water Tower Lane, continue along Tainters Hill and then left along Manor Road. Along here you will pass the water tower.
  1. Continue on Manor Road and cross the bridge, turning right onto the path along the brook.
  1. Follow the brook all the way to Bridge Street. Go under the bridge and then enter Abbey Fields and walk towards St Nicholas Church.
  1. Having taken in the church, walk down the unpathed path (back to the church door) to the ruins of the abbey.
  1. Continue through Abbey Fields back towards the war memorial. Pass the war memorial again and continue to Abbey End to see the memorial to those who died during the 1940 bombing raids.
  1. Continue down Warwick Road to reach the Kings Arms Inn (Zizzi) where the walk ends.

Kenilworth Town Council has produced a map and leaflet to accompany this walk. This can be accessed by following this link.
