Town council demands better communication on university's new eco park for Kenilworth residents

By James Smith 19th Jan 2022

Better communication is needed from the University of Warwick over plans to build a 48-hectare eco park.

That is the message from Kenilworth Town Councillors who expressed their concerns that the university has seemingly cut its contact with the council.

Following a discussion at last week's town council meeting, the town's mayor will write to the Vice Chancellor of the University of Warwick asking for more information on the proposed eco park and new stadium for Coventry City Football Club.

And Cllr Peter Jones will ask the university to host a virtual briefing for local residents giving more information on the developments.

Discussions were prompted by a public question urging the council to "request that University of Warwick inform you and the residents of Kenilworth about the proposed stadium for Coventry City Football Club".

Plans for the park, which would be on the south side of campus, were revealed last June.

Designed to support active travel and sustainability, the park could be a boarding point for the proposed very light rail service.

Town councillors, who supported the call for better communication, were surprised to hear that Burton Green residents had already been offered a briefing by the university, whereas Kenilworth's have not.

"In the past they have been very good and kept us up to date, and we have had a very good relationship with them," said Cllr Michael Coker.

"I am very surprised that they haven't been forthcoming on this."

Town Clerk Maggie Field added that a university-led presentation for councillors had been agreed last August, but the date "came and went" without a meeting despite "a number of chase up emails" from the town council.
