Plans to knock down and rebuild a "sad" bungalow in Kenilworth look set to be halted despite the support of local residents.

The owners of a Grade-II listed bungalow on Fieldgate Lane want to demolish it and build a five-bedroom house.

Council officers have called for the application to be refused, saying it is harmful to the conservation area.

But residents have said the plans would give a new lease of life to the "dilapidated" site.

"I support this planning application because it will be a betterment to the area," said Stephanie Mouland.

"I work at the local nursery and my daughter attends the local school, I travel past the existing dilapidated house every day which is currently not in keeping with the area.

"My daughter calls it the 'the sad house' when we pass it!

"The proposed house is similar to other properties on the road and therefore I think it should be given planning permission."

Only two objections from residents have been registered, both from neighbours complaining about the size of the new building.

"I object to the proposal on the grounds that it is too large and would cause harm to the setting of two listed buildings and has the potential to cause harm to the remaining trees surrounding the current property," said Sarah Shute.

"I strongly feel it is our responsibility as current custodians, residents, and decision makers to preserve as much as possible of what makes the area beautiful and special for future generations."

The application, which was first submitted in January 2021, will be discussed by Warwick District Council councillors on Tuesday (February 1) night.
