New 'Community Garden' and household 'Repair Cafe' announced for Kenilworth

By James Smith 5th Aug 2021

A new 'Community Garden' and a 'Repair Cafe' have been announced for Kenilworth on the back of funding from Warwickshire County Council.

The cafe will provide an opportunity for householders to get their broken items repaired whilst learning how to do it themselves in the future. Meanwhile the Kenilworth Centre Community Garden will provide more green communal space for the town.

The new investments are two of 69 projects that will be funded by WCC's £1m Green Shoots Community Climate Change Fund.

Over 100 local organisation applied for funding after the scheme was announced in February, with successful projects also including forestry rewilding, solar panel installations, and new cycling and walking schemes.

The successful grant of up to £25,000 for the Kenilworth Centre Community Gardens was applied for by tKC and The Talisman Project.

Whilst Kenilworth's new Repair Cafe, which will be similar to those already in Leamington Rugby, Southam and Alcester, will receive up to £5,000.

The precise location and start dates of the two projects is yet to be confirmed.

Cllr Heather Timms of WCC said that the projects demonstrated the council's commitment to its response to the climate change emergency announced in 2019.

"The £1million fund that we have made available is one of the largest offered by any local authority," she said. "The fact that we have already been able to allocate over £600K in funding to projects across Warwickshire is a shining example of how committed our communities are to playing their role in facing the climate change emergency through direct strategic action.

"There is already a lot of fantastic work going on across Warwickshire to help reduce carbon footprints and minimise the effects that we all have on our fast-changing climate.

"Thanks to the Green Shoots Fund, there are now 69 more projects and initiatives that will each contribute to making a difference and to making Warwickshire sustainable now and for future generations."
