Kenilworth Lions announce cancellation of Boxing Day Duck Race

Kenilworth Lions have today announced that their annual Duck Race will not take place this Boxing Day.

Normally held at Abbey Fields, the race is yet another event on the Kenilworth calendar that has regrettably been cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

We have already seen the cancellation of the Kenilworth Half Marathon, the Two Castles Run, and the annual fireworks event in November.

Provisional plans have rescheduled the event for Easter Monday (April 5 2021).

The event usually sees the Town's Mayor tip 1500 plastic ducks into the Ford, for them to 'race' the 200 metre course.

Each duck is numbered, and raffle tickets are bought, one for each duck - the winning ticket receiving a cash prize.

The event, organised for charitable causes, has raised over £80,000 since its inception.

Similarly, the 'Carols in the Park' Christmas Carol concert, also usually held in Abbey Fields, has had to be rearranged. However, organisers are intending to host a virtual event this December 19.

In a statement on Facebook Kenilworth Lions said "with nearly all the usual Christmas events in Kenilworth being cancelled this year, the Lions hope that their virtual Carol Concert will gain wide support from local people and help to bring the community together to celebrate the festive season in a safe and enjoyable manner."
