A gastropub has raised nearly £2,000 for the local charity Covid-19 Kenilworth Support group over the weekend.

Kenilworth's The Almanack hosted two chicken takeaways on Friday (February 5) and Saturday (February 6) for residents out on their daily exercise.

The pub also served takeaway coffees for walkers in Abbey Fields on the Saturday morning, all in aid of the charity.

Covid-19 Kenilworth Support group was established in spring 2020 during the first national lockdown. Volunteer-led, the group has been supplying meals, doing shopping and delivering prescriptions for the most vulnerable members of the local community.

Across the three temporary openings the pub raised for them a total of £1,851.

At the chicken takeaways, the pub was offering fried chicken with a choice of four seasonings, or a buttermilk chicken burger, all still using their local supplier.

On the Saturday morning guests could purchase a coffee as well as a selection of homemade cakes which ran out very quickly!

Speaking to Kenilworth Nub News, Manager at The Almanack Kieran Vick said: "The Almanack is part of Peach Pub Company; giving back to the community and supporting local charities is what we do.

"It's clear to see the fantastic work the Covid-19 support group is doing, if we can help them by doing what we do best, we can. We have donated food to them when we have closed down the pub before so they have always been a charity close to us."

The Almanack has not reopened since the start of the third national lockdown, and so the charity weekend was the first time in weeks that guests had been allowed in.

Kieran added: "It was great to have guests back in the pub again. Albeit not the same as before, adhering to the government guidelines around 'hands, face, space' but it was great to get some of the team back together and have a great time serving our guests!

"The support was really overwhelming and it was amazing to see the figures at the end.

"The support was great, more than I could of hoped for. My management team did the majority of the baking and the cakes sold out within the first few hours, leaving a mid service dash to grab more from the local bakery!"

Mayor of Kenilworth Cllr Richard Dickson, a trustee of the Covid-19 Kenilworth Support group, stopped in at The Almanack on Saturday whilst out for his daily permitted walk.

He said: "We're hugely grateful to The Almanack for their generosity in this initiative and obviously also a huge thank you to everyone who - whilst still respecting spatial distancing whilst out on their daily exercise or essential business - drops in to The Almanack whilst they're open.

"The response of Kenilworth people supporting one another during this pandemic has been amazing."

Whilst the Almanack remains closed due to government restrictions, the pub is offering their 'Peach At Home' boxes for delivery. Included is a meal for two that is prepared in the pub and delivered to your door.

Both the Almanak and the Covid-19 Kenilworth Support Group commented that while they welcome everyone's support, they implore people to stick to the government guidelines, to ensure we keep both our community and our amazing NHS safe.

Kieran said: "The more we all adhere to guidelines around social distancing and mask wearing, the sooner we will beat the virus and the sooner our business doors can reopen to welcome you all back inside safely."
