Warwick District Council has said that Kenilworth's lido will need to remain closed in order to prioritise indoor swimming lessons at Abbey Fields Leisure Centre.

Despite this, WDC has said that reopening the outdoor pool "is still under review".

WDC has instructed the leisure centre's operator Everyone Active to prioritise swimming lessons in the indoor pool due to a surge in demand.

Warwick District Council has told the company to make sure that local children do not miss out on vital swimming lessons.

The council has said that staff time and resources need to focus on lessons and not the outdoor pool.

The instructions to Everyone Active come as the government announced an extension to social distancing regulations until the end of July at least.

Warwick District Council's portfolio holder for culture, tourism and leisure Cllr Liam Bartlett has said that the main efforts need to be on ensuring children do not miss out on lessons.

He said: "Although the case for reopening the outdoor pool is still under review, our efforts need to focus on making our pools safe and accessible for as many 'learn to swim' sessions as possible, with so many local children missing out on this life skill during the lockdowns.

"In the case of Kenilworth, this will mean keeping the outdoor pool closed, so that we can concentrate our staff time and resources on giving lessons and ensuring that all social distancing protocols required by Swim England remain in place."
