Could Station Road be closed to vehicles permanently?

Station Road could be closed to vehicles permanently if experimental plans by Warwickshire County Council are approved.

The road was initially closed during the pandemic to ease social distancing.

But WCC is proposing to close the road indefinitely as part of the government's welcome back initiative to encourage shoppers back to the high street.

The extended closure into 2022 "is needed during normal traffic and pedestrian volumes to measure its successes and downfalls" according to the council.

Residents will have until May 29 2022 to object to the plans, but the experimental order could be in place for up to 18 months.

The road will be split into two sections for the closure. The first 16m from Warwick Road - outside Pomeroy's Bistro - will be closed to all traffic (as it is now).

Then the next 82m will only be used for goods and emergency vehicles, and to access the Talisman Square car park.

The start of the closure will still be marked out with signs and bollards.

This can be seen in the diagram.

The council said the closure would allow more outside seating in the area and solve the problem of drivers ignoring the no right turn onto Warwick Road.

"This promotes public to come back to local areas in order to promote local businesses," it said.

"The additional space gained from the closure of the road allows for extra outdoor dining and extra space to allow for safe interaction and visiting, therefore facilitating the passage on the road for pedestrians."
